2nd Grade
Instructor: Mrs. Burch, Mrs. Fines, Mrs. Hendricks, Ms. Trento, Miss Hundzienski
Welcome to Second Grade at Hartwood Elementary! This year is full of opportunities to learn and grow both academically and socially.  Our focus is on building reading competency and mathematical understanding.  In Reading, we are working on fluency, comprehension strategies, vocabulary and using phonetic principles.  In Math, we are laying the foundation of understanding the number system, addition and subtraction, geometry, fractions, data analysis, and measurement.  Second Grade is MAD about Science and loves Social Studies.  Check out the units we will be discussing in theme this year.  In our classrooms we are building our own community- a community of learners.

2nd Grade Announcements
Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving

It's that time of year...the second graders are practicing for their program, Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving.  Come support our students as they act and sing away the night on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00
American Indian Project

Last week we began our American Indian unit. Along with this unit, we will be assigning an American Indian project to be completed at home.  An informational sheet with instructions and expectations was sent home in your child’s agenda. Your child will be required to create an American Indian home of their choice (longhouse, teepee, or Pueblo). Please make sure this is student made with minimal parent help! The project will be due November 23.

Book It!

Don't forget to have your child read 4 nights a week every week of the month to earn himself or herself a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!

Flat Stanley

Flat Stanley is in the air!  We have written our letters and our Flat Stanleys have been mailed.  If you have not sent in an addressed, stamped envelope yet please do so.  We hope to have every second grade student send a Flat Stanley to a friend or family member.
Reinfoce the importance of school at home

Reinforce the importance of school at home.  Please ask your student daily to tell you two positive things they did in school today.  Children will rise to meet high expectations set for them so set high behavioral and academic expectations for your child!

Field Trip!

Our first field trip of the year is just around the corner!  Just a reminder we will be going to Ferry Farms.  Mrs. Burch and Mrs. Fines's class will go on October 20.  Mrs. Hendricks, Ms. Trento, and Miss Hundzienski will go on October 22.  Don't forget to send in the permission slips and $11 cash or check made out to Hartwood Elementary.
Tomorrow is the first day of Fall!
September 21, 2009

We have had a great first two weeks of school and it's hard to believe Fall begins tomorrow.

Last week we adopted trees outside the front entrance to Hartwood Elementary.  The students have chosen a tree to follow over the school year.  They will watch their tree and note the changes over the seasons in their science folders we have created for them.  The students will also get to track their own changes as they will be photographed with their trees during Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Just a reminder:  Parent Night is next week!!  Tuesday, September 29 at 6:30 in your child's classroom to learn about our daily routines and what we have been doing in school thus far.
